Historically, avvisi have been a valued source of information for modern historical research. The purpose of this project is to advance the research of scholars of all levels through accessing the growth of early communication systems and the modalities of the exchange of information at differing geographic points.

(1) Help scholars study the conditions that permitted the values of global capitalism, modern diplomacy, and democracy.

(2) Help scholars trace how early modern readerships developed healthy skepticism towards news that they relied upon in order to be informed.

(3) Help scholars shed light on modern techniques of censorship, political manipulation, popular revolutions, and the construction of national identities.

(4) Give scholars insight into how urban populations of Europe and the Mediterranean began to perceive connections between their own lives and the daily events unfolding in distant corners of the globe and the economies of knowledge exchange between center and periphery.
